Battery Safety Sensors
Honeywell battery safety sensors, including aerosol and pressure sensors, and electrolyte detectors, are designed to detect early signs of thermal runaway in lithium-ion battery packs, enhancing safety in electric vehicles and energy storage systems.
Battery safety sensors are a cornerstone of Honeywell’s electrification portfolio, providing critical protection for lithium-ion battery systems in electric vehicles (EVs) and energy storage applications. Our range of advanced safety sensors is designed to detect early warning signs of thermal runaway, enhancing the safety and performance of energy storage systems. The Battery Aerosol Safety Sensors (BAS Series) are automotive-grade sensors that leverage the principle of light scattering to detect thermal runaway events within lithium-ion battery packs. By identifying the presence and concentration of aerosols such as smoke, liquid, and debris, these sensors offer real-time alerts to early indicators of potential thermal events. The ability to detect these aerosols in an enclosed battery environment enables swift action to prevent catastrophic failures and safeguard both the battery system and its surroundings.Honeywell Battery Pressure Sensors (BPS Series) are also designed to monitor and report pressure changes within lithium-ion battery packs. These automotive-grade sensors combine MEMS (Micro-Electromechanical Systems) and ASIC (Application-Specific Integrated Circuit) technologies to provide precise, real-time monitoring of pressure variations—critical for detecting thermal runaway events. These sensors are essential for maintaining the safety and reliability of battery systems in electric vehicles and energy storage systems (ESS), where even small pressure changes can be a sign of impending danger. Our Battery Safety Electrolyte Detector (BES LITE) offers a cost-effective, lightweight solution for detecting potential thermal events in battery packs. Using Honeywell’s proprietary gas sensing technology, the BES LITE selectively detects the presence of battery electrolyte vapor, which serves as an early warning signal of thermal runaway. By providing advanced detection of this vapor, the BES LITE allows for timely intervention, reducing the risk of catastrophic failure in lithium-ion battery systems.Together, these advanced battery safety solutions represent Honeywell’s commitment to supporting the electrification revolution with cutting-edge technology designed to protect and enhance the safety of energy storage systems and electric vehicles.
