    Providing patients with a safe environment for their care and recovery requires a commitment to hand hygiene and the proper cleaning of the equipment used by healthcare professionals. Honeywell offers white disinfectant-ready 1950h/1952h/1952h Battery Free Scanner models that are designed to resist the effects of harsh chemicals in a healthcare environment. This document will describe how to safely clean Honeywell disinfectant-ready scanners.

    How is Honeywell non-healthcare housing different from healthcare disinfectant-ready housing?

    At Honeywell, we know that our healthcare products must be designed to withstand the regular cleaning protocol required to address the infection and disease control needs of the industry.

    Non-Healthcare Product Housing. Non-healthcare data collection hardware is traditionally housed in amorphous plastics. These plastics, including polycarbonate/acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (PC/ABS), are usually chosen because they can be easily manufactured.

    Housings made of PC/ABS contain a loosely packed structure that makes it easier for chemicals to penetrate the plastic. Repeated use of chemical cleansers may cause discoloration, swelling, hardening and cracking of rubber and certain plastics after prolonged and repeated use. Cracks can also lead to hardware failure, which increases the total cost of ownership by causing increased downtime and repair/replacement costs.

    Manufacturers are increasingly incorporating anti-bacterial or anti-microbial additives into healthcare products. This can give end users the impression that the products perform “better” than comparable products without this labeling, when in fact the CDC notes, "No evidence is available to suggest that use of these products will make consumers and patients healthier or prevent disease... No data supports the use of these items as part of a sound infection control strategy."

    Healthcare Disinfectant-ready Product Housing. Honeywell was the first company in the barcode scanning industry to introduce disinfectant-ready housings (DRHs), a healthcare solution designed specifically to address this concern. DRHs are built to withstand frequent exposure to any of the recommended cleaning solutions, minimizing the risk of spreading infectious diseases.

    How should I clean Honeywell Xenon Extreme Performance 1950h/1952h/1952h Battery Free Scanners?

    Always follow your organization’s hygiene or infection-control protocols and the instructions for use provided by the disinfectant manufacturer.

    1. Turn off the scanner.
    2. Ensure that the battery is properly installed to prevent liquid from entering the device.
    3. Use a pre-moistened disinfectant wipe, or if using a liquid solution, apply the approved cleaning solution to a sterile cloth. Wring out any excess liquid.

    4. Gently wipe all surfaces of the Honeywell scanner with the moistened cloth.
    • Wipe the front, back, sides, top and bottom.
    • Do not apply liquid directly to the scanner.
    • Do not allow excess liquid to pool on the device near the scanner window, trigger, cable connector or any other area on the device.
    5. Clean the trigger and in between the trigger and the housing.
    • Use a cotton-tipped applicator to reach the tight or inaccessible areas.
    • Use a cotton-tipped swab to clean between the tight and inaccessible areas of the scanner.

    6. Clean the scanner exit window with a soft cloth or lens tissue that is suitable for cleaning optical materials such as eye glasses. Reading performance may degrade if the scanner’s window is not clean. If the window is visibly dirty, or if the scan isn’t operating well, clean the window with one of the cleaning solutions listed below. Scanner Charging Contacts 7. The scanner charging contacts should be cleaned monthly with a cotton-tipped swab dipped in isopropyl alcohol to provide the ideal charger-to-battery contact.
    • Gently rub the moistened cotton-tipped swab from side to side of the connector.
    • Rub all sides of the connector with the cotton-tipped swab.
    • Inspect the cradle contacts to make sure you remove any material left from the cotton-tipped swab.
    • Allow the isopropyl alcohol to air dry or dry with lint-free cloth or towelette.
    • Inspect the scanner contacts to make sure you remove any material left from the cotton-tipped swab
    • Make sure the cradle contacts are completely dry before applying electrical power.

    8. Use lint free cloth, cotton-tipped swab and isopropyl alcohol or pre-moistened alcohol wipe to remove debris and grease from surface of the cradle.
    • Disconnect the power cable from the cradle.
    • Gently rub the moistened cotton-tipped swab along the pins of the connector.
    • Slowly move the cotton-tipped swab from side to side of the connector.
    • Make sure you rub all sides of the connector with the cotton-tipped swab.
    • Inspect the cradle contacts to make sure you remove any material left from the cotton-tipped swab.
    • Allow the isopropyl alcohol to air dry or dry with lint-free cloth or towelette.
    • Make sure the cradle contacts are completely dry before applying electrical power.
    • Inspect the cradle to make sure you remove any material left from the cotton-tipped swab and/or cloth during the cleaning process.

    9. Allow the scanner to completely air dry before turning on the power and/or placing it in a charger.



    Warnings/Precautions. Do not submerge the scanner in water. The scanner’s housing is not watertight. Do not use abrasive wipes or tissues on the scanner window. Abrasive wipes may scratch the window. Never use solvents (e.g., acetone) on the housing or window solvents may damage the finish or the window.

    What are the approved cleaning solutions that can be used on Xenon Extreme Performance 1950h/1952h/1952h Battery Free Scanners?

    Some configurations of Xenon scanners are available with an external plastic housing that is designed to resist the effects of harsh chemicals in healthcare environment. The plastic is crystalline in nature, which helps prevent chemicals from seeping through the housing.

    The following cleaning solutions have been tested to assure safe cleaning of your scanner’s disinfectant-ready housing. They are the only solutions approved for use with these scanners. Damage caused by the use of cleaners other than those listed below may not be covered by the warranty.
