Honeywell is collaborating with our authorized North American distributors BlueStar, Ingram Micro and ScanSource, to bring you insights into application and technology trends that enable our channel partners and their customers to achieve business goals in these everchanging market dynamics.
Honeywell is featured in BlueStar podcast “TechConnect” on the topic of Smart Manufacturing and Industrial IIoT
In this podcast episode of the “TechConnect,” podcast series, hosts John Martin and Dean Reverman have an engaging and enlightening conversation Michael Noyes, Honeywell’s VP & GM of Productivity Solutions and Services. During the interview, they discuss Smart Manufacturing and Industrial IIoT:
- What is a smart factory?
- How does IIoT differ from the IoT
- How this technology is integrating with existing systems
- How smart manufacturing is helping companies stay open and productive in a pandemic
Listen to the episode “Smart Manufacturing and Industrial IIot” here.
Here are a takeaways from the podcast:
- Smart Manufacturing: Digital Cross Section of the Manufacturing Plant with a Digital Initiative
Smart Factory is a highly digitized shop floor that continuously collects and shares data through connected machines, devices, and production systems. Consider a few examples:
- Cobots where humans working alongside robotics where they coexist and counteract
- Environmental health and safety with the green initiatives where the plants are automated and simple things like the lights automatically turning on when you enter an area.
- Passive and dynamic sensors that are used for prognostics and diagnostics related to almost every aspect of an efficiently running plant such as diagnosing underperforming equipment on the factory floor.
- Industrial IIoT vs Consumer IoT
IoT, Internet of Things, is often referred to a “smart” object. This includes from cars, home appliances to shoes and light switches that connect to the internet. IIoT, stands for Industrial Internet of Things. Both concepts have the same main character of availability, intelligent and connected devices. While IoT is most commonly used for consumer usage, IIoT is used for industrial purpose such as manufacturing, supply chain monitor and management system. The IIoT ecosystem comprises hardware, middleware, connectivity, software, and advanced technologies which benefits access to data-driven and predictive insights to impact performance and efficiency.
This includes asset tracking and management, fleet management, inventory management, warehouse management, and connected factories. The IIOT requires a higher level of security and internet infrastructure. For example, in warehousing, we are using robots for pick and place.
- Gain Competitive Edge of the IIOT
IIOT provides competitive edge for manufacturing and industry in numerous directions. It provides operational intelligences such as in real-time performance data which is used to reduce manufacturing costs, increase flexibility and agility. Connected digital assets provide actionable insights that can empower a workforce with improved productivity, quality and even prevent safety and compliance issues. IIoT can optimize asset efficiency. For example, with device and equipment applications, you gain equipment health monitoring, predictive maintenance, the ability to provide augmented 3D instructions for complex repairs. You can also scale production more precisely with better control over processes and inventory. You essentially connect the shop floor to the decision makers who manage the business to get wing to wing visibility. We have just begun to see the innovation associated with IIOT.
- Influence of 5G on IIOT
5G is going to be instrumental in giving the industrial sector the ability to deliver local and customized services with secure and reliable wireless connectivity. 5G accelerates the rate of data download, enabling the of use real-time data in the industrial operations. Images and data can be downloaded much faster with 5G integrated IIoT devices. For example, in connected factories, using a 5G integrated cloud for manufacturing solutions, you will get more data to be downloaded, uploaded and shared among the machines. 5G increases the pace of robots by increasing the rate of wireless control or programming transfer between robots and the IIoT-based controller. By boosting the processing time and data throughput for robots, you enable robots to be more easily connected to workers and machines.
- Honeywell IIOT Innovation
Honeywell has been aggressively introducing a full complement of IIOT innovation across its portfolio of mobile computers, printers, scanners, industrial printers and more.
Honeywell’s Mobility Edge™ platform , a unified hardware and software architecture with an integrated software toolset that extends asset life, accelerates deployment and simplifies management of mobility solutions. Honeywell Mobility Edge is the leader in Android version support providing the best available security, features, and lifecycle duration of any ruggedized device in the world. Honeywell is deeply committed to the longevity and quality of the Mobility Edge platform. The following products are built on the Mobility Edge platform: Honeywell™ CT40, CT40XP, CT60, CT60XP, CN80, CK65, RT10A, and Thor™ VM1A, and VM3A.
Honeywell Operational Intelligence platform for the workplace, a cloud-based software solution that systematically tracks, manages and optimizes mobile computers throughout the operational lifecycle. New features were recently added to the Operational Intelligence platform to help companies enhance health and safety procedures for mobile workers returning to the workplace.
FlexRange scan imager can eliminate the need for employees to carry multiple devices for data capture. The FlexRange scan engine features two complete optical paths, which, unlike competitive products, have no moving parts, enabling it to simultaneously capture near and far range images without latency. The two optical paths cover very short range to long range typical of warehouse pallet racks, often giving users the flexibility of using a single device for all use cases while enabling dual-image software applications that leverage dual narrow and wide-angle images such as scene validation.
And much more.
