You can’t skimp on detecting toxic gases, but that doesn’t mean it has to blow your budget.

You can’t skimp on detecting toxic gases, but that doesn’t mean it has to blow your budget.

The semiconductor, chemical, and solar industries – as well as many others such as national and university research labs – rely on toxic gases for many of their processes, making detection of these gases a safety priority. There are a number of technologies that can be used to accomplish this, and Honeywell now offers a new gas detection system based on colorimetric technology with an enhanced sample distance of up to 400 feet. This technology can be more cost-effective than other options such as electromechanical sensors or infrared spectroscopy for isolated gas monitoring sites needing stand- alone, low-point count detection.

The Honeywell VC4 is a continuous 4-points gas detection system, based on Honeywell’s highly reliable flow-through Chemcassette® technology, with a more advanced, robust, friendly design that offers an interference-free, low-maintenance, and low cost-of-ownership solution.

    Colorimetric technology

Colorimetric gas detection employs a chemical reaction that produces a visible color change when target gases are present. While an economical solution, this technology is also highly sensitive and able to detect very low gas concentrations down to parts-per-billion levels. This makes it a good choice when needing to detect even trace amounts of gases. And while trace amounts might seem less dangerous, gases used in the industries mentioned above can be harmful even at low concentrations.

This economical method has several benefits over other methods of gas detection, such as electromechanical sensors or infrared spectroscopy, including ease of use: specialized training is not needed, making it accessible to a wide range of users. Colorimetric gas detection is also very versatile in the wide variety of gases it can identify, and calibration is not needed, resulting in a plug-and-play experience in the use of Chemcassettes.

Honeywell VC4 – gas detection with all the features you need

Utilizing an advanced modular design. Honeywell’s VC4 represents the latest in reduced interference, easy maintenance, and low cost of ownership in gas detection.

It’s easy to use, with a 7” LED touchscreen for fast and easy navigation, such as two-click access to critical menus. The advanced, intuitive Human Machine Interface (HMI) based on Linox OS was designed for quick and easy access to critical information, and the VC4 has a built-in web server for remote viewing and control (including alarm resets), as well as an LED Indicator for instrument status. A USB interface makes it easy to export data, configure the system and its alarms, and upgrade software, while support for multiple communications protocols makes the VC4 a very flexible option. A manual override button is also featured.

Accurate and reliable, the VC4 offers parts per billion (ppb) toxic gas detection with Honeywell’s Chemcassette technology that can recognize gases even at low concentrations with a clear, easy-to- view stain on chemically treated tape. In addition, the ‘flow-through’ method of sample gas delivery results in very well-defined stains even at low concentrations. This type of high-quality detection can reduce false alarms and system downtimes to support a low total cost of ownership.

Further enhancing cost-of-ownership, the long-life Chemcassettes are accurate for up to 180 days, or about six months, with hydrides, ammonia, and phosgene gases, reducing the touchpoints for each device. * Each Chemcassette is designed for fail-safe operation with an RFID tag, and the modular design provides stable performance and easy Chemcassette replacement during service and maintenance. An optional rack mount kit is available with a slides kit, IO extension cable kit, stylus pen, Hex standoff spacer, fuse, and ferrite noise suppressor.

The 4-point gas detection system incorporates a faster gas leak response time through a sampling flow rate at each detection point of 2.8 LPM (liters per minute) for a 120 M sample line, which meet global certification requirements as well as the latest Taiwanese environmental protection requirements.
